Why Should You See An Orthodontist?

Do you live in San Antonio and want to improve your (or your child’s) smile? Are you looking for an orthodontist to put braces on your teeth? Malocclusion, a misaligned bite, is often the reason you begin to find an orthodontist nearby.

A new smile is an investment in your child’s (or your) future. It is so much more than just straightening a few teeth. A beautiful smile can increase your confidence and improve health. Here are some things you should know about finding an orthodontist who understands the power of smiles.

Should I go to the dentist or orthodontist for braces?

With so many opportunities to get clear aligners or braces at your dentist office, or from a mail-order company, why see an orthodontist? Dentists are trained to help keep your teeth clean and to resolve oral health issues. So, what is the benefit of seeing an orthodontist instead of your general dentist? The simple answer is: orthodontists have specialized training both in the growth and development of the teeth and jaws, and in the movement of teeth. This makes them experts in how teeth fit together and function for a smile that lasts a lifetime.

While every orthodontist becomes a dentist first, all the ins and outs of malocclusion are not taught in dental school. Orthodontists are dental specialists who continued their education for an additional 2-3 years to learn about proper bite alignment. It’s about more than creating a beautiful smile. The alignment of your teeth and jaws can impact your long term health as well. Orthodontists are trained to evaluate what additional movements need to happen to create a healthier you.

During their orthodontic residency program, they are exposed to the latest technology and tools and learn a variety of approaches to problem solving. This benefits the patient by ensuring the orthodontist has many options for creating a customized treatment plan for each patient.

Do I need to continue going to the dentist while I have braces?

Absolutely. Your orthodontist is watching to make sure that your bite and teeth are moving into the right positions. Your dentist will watch for cavities and healthy oral habits. Dr. Britton will remind you to have good oral hygiene habits while in braces. However, orthodontic visits do not replace your regular hygiene appointments. In fact, if you don't stay on top of your oral hygiene, your orthodontist may recommend going to the dentist MORE often during treatment to ensure a beautiful, healthy smile.
